Saturday's cool, rainy weather may have tarnished many outdoor
plans last weekend, but it wasn't enough to dampen spirits at
the Corso Italia Toronto Fiesta.
The sixth annual street festival and sidewalk sale started Friday,
July 11 and ran until Sunday along St. Clair Avenue West, between
Westmount Avenue and Earlscourt Park at 1200 Lansdowne Ave.
The festival offered street-level entertainment from 20 bands,
an array of food, plenty of great buys, and of course, world record-breaking
action from Gino Cucchi.
Cucchi, owner of Gino's Fashions at 1294 St. Clair W., made it
into the Guinness Book of World Records for making the world's
longest spaghetti strand.
Cucchi, who is also vice president of the Corso Italia Business
Improvement Association, broke the world record of 418 feet by
making a whopping 503-foot-long string of pasta.
He said accomplishing his goal felt, "Good. Great actually."
"I had a good bunch of people, everyone helped. We thought
it couldn't be done because it needed a lot of workmanship, but
it was great," he said.
"It was not only great for our business association, but
it was great for Toronto because we got a lot of mileage out of
it. Every television station picked it up."
Aside from his own endeavor, Cucchi said he was impressed with
the festival's overall turnout.
"The festival was good. If we take into consideration the
bad weather, it was pretty good - very successful."
