Chilean artist Roberto Cortez was on hand
today at the launch of the week long display
of his works at the Exquisito Restaurant on
St Clair.
Cortez' works are interpretations of the poems
of Pablo Neruda, the highly regarded Chilean
poet whose 100th birthday was celebrated on
July 12th of this year.
Neruda, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature
in 1971, just two years before his death in
1973. His poems included many political themes.
He is also well known for his love poems.
The poet and playwright, whose real name was
Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, also served
for many years as a diplomat when not in hiding
from repressive governments.
The works on display at Exquisito reflect
the more erotic aspects of Neruda's work.
The collection will also be on display at
City Hall from August 23-39. The works are
available for acquisiton and many have already
been sold. The artist will be returning to
Chile after the Exquisito showing.
Exquisito, located at 813 St Clair Ave W,
in the restaurant strip known as 'The Patio',
serves Latin American cuisine prepared by
chef and owner Milbert Bravo, including the
best empanadas in the City and excellent tropical
martinis. There is live music on weekends.
