The
first time I came across this Veteran's Memorial
in Prospect Cemetery it was on a leisurely walk
on a sunny day.
I
decided to walk over and examine it more closely
... and then began to read the names of those
who were laid to rest in its shadow. It somehow
made my understanding of that time more real -
here lay real people who had given their lives,
the real lives of real sons and brothers, fathers
and husbands.
Upon
returning there to take this photo there were
a number of young people, perhaps in their early
teens, who were doing much as I had done - and
try as they might to be earnest about the effort
you could see that it did not have the same impact
- for them it was just a field trip - and I was
happy for that fact.
