| In
1962 my mother, Elizabeth Scheer, a Registered Nurse, bought #80 Wychwood
Park, an existing nursing home with 25 beds. Wychwood Park is a quiet,
peaceful, picturesque neighbourhood in the heart of Toronto which was
originally an artists community.
In 1982 my mother renovated the building, decreased the number of residents
to 12 and significantly increased the room sizes. As my mother aged she
asked me to help her and, since I grew up in the house, I was very glad
to be of assistance. Having lived all my life with frail, elderly and
dependent older adults, my transition to full-time administrator was relatively
easy. I have now been in charge of the facility for 15 years, and my mother
lives in an apartment within the building still.
Nowadays, Briar Crest provides total care for 10 dependent adult women.
We offer private accommodations in a beautifully renovated house located
in Wychwood Park, where residents can enjoy outdoor surroundings in a
protected environment. Home cooked meals and supervised care are provided
24 hours a day. Every attention is given to detail and the majority of
our residents prefer interacting on a smaller social scale. The family
dog, Honey, is a great companion to many of our residents.
The Administrator is on the premises daily, except for weekends, and always
within easy call living next door. A registered Nurse is on call each
day, and pharmacy and laboratory service is provided in house. In this
setting, we also provide end of life care of the very highest standard.
We have a family physician that comes to the facility whenever necessary
and physiotherapy, manicures and pedicures are available weekly.
Thanks for your interest,
Gaby
