Subject: Spadina Avenue
I had lunch today, as I usually do a few times a month, at <a
restaurant located on Spadina Avenue, near Dundas>. I asked
the owner what he thought about the street car right-of-way outside
his front door.
He told me that he set up shop after the construction had begun
so that he could not say what affect it had on his business. There
were meetings but, in the end, he believes that the community
was not listened to. He has noticed a decline in other businesses
and Chocky's, which has been there since at least the last ice
age, has recently moved to another location. He thinks that the
lack of parking and the inability to make turns on the street
has hampered businesses in general.
He also thinks that the number of accidents has not been reduced
considerably. He says that there are still many accidents between
street cars and cars trying to make left-hand turns and that this
is caused by the confusion of the many different sets of lights
which some people have difficulty understand which is theirs'.
He also said that he believes that the street cars have a law
unto themselves.
He said that there were many accidents at the intersection of
Dundas and Spadina, mainly between cars and pedestrians, also
because of the confusion about which lights applied to whom.
When I told him that the same thing might happen to St. Clair
Ave., he said; "Tell them NO!"
