Sarah Lockett, founder of the Ontario School of Ballet, chats with Your Dance Fest organizer Candice Irwin at Regal Heights Neighbourhood Summit.
The first ever Regal Heights Neighbourhood Summit was held at Oakwood Collegiate on Thursday March 30. Over 40 people, representing a similar number of local businesses and organizations, were there to meet and learn about each other.
Melanie Haggerty of Midtown Toastmasters emceed the event. Following brief welcome comments by organizers Tony Bolla and Marjolein Winterink everyone at the event was formally introduced. There were also a number of display tables showcasing local initiatives including:
- the development by Main and Main at the corner of Alberta and St Clair West
- the Your Dance Festival being slated for late August
- a Popup Retail initiative
- sweet delicacies by Cakes Cove
The principal of Oakwood, Steve Yee, provided some excitement by outlining the plans for the school grounds. There were also comments made by TDSB Trustee Marit Stiles, MPP Cristina Martins and Liam Lindop from MP Julie Derzowicz's office which focused on their interest in supporting local business.
Also noted was the potential for the area to be recognized for dance given the presence of the Ontario School of Ballet, Axe Capoeira, the Oakwood Dance Program and Your Dance Fest.
It was also good to see both police and fire services on hand as part of their community outreach mandate.
While there was no specific objective for this meeting other than to ensure that area stakeholders had an opportunity to meet each other and learn about what they were each working on, it is firmly believed that some collaborative undertakings will emerge.
